Gabe Perreault has two point night for Boston College
Jaroslav Chmelar got his Providence Friars going scoring the game’s first goal and added a secondary assist on another goal as his eighth-ranked Providence Friars opened Hockey East play with a dominating 4-1 win over the Vermont Catamounts. The leading scorer for Providence, Chmelar with his 1-1-2 night improved to 4-5-9 effort after six games.
In the first period, Chmelar got the Friars going when he picked up a loose rebound of a shot and fired it past the Vermont goalie for the 1-0 lead on an even-strength goal.
In the second period, Chmelar added a secondary assist on Providence’s third goal of the game for his other point. Chmelar has recorded points in all six of the Providence games played.
Gabe Perreault had his second two-assist game of the season as his third-ranked Boston College Eagles had little trouble with the seventh-ranked Michigan State Spartans earning a 5-1 non-conference win. The first assist was the better assist as with three Spartan defenders moving to check him, Perreault backhanded a pass to a wide open Cutter Gauthier for a power-play goal at 5:30 of the second period.
Very hard not to like how Perreault can make these hard plays look so very easy. The second assist was actually easier as Perrault just flicked the puck over to linemate Jack Malone and Malone just fired a shot for the goal.
The two assists along with two shots and a +1 as Perreault is now 1-6-7 after six games good for second best among Boston College scorers. Teammate defenseman Drew Fortescue did not record any stats in this game.
Maxim Barbashev earned third star of the game honors with a 1-1-2 effort but it was not enough to prevent his Shawinigan Cataractes from losing their third straight game 5-2 to the Victoriaville Tigres in QMJHL play. Barbashev recorded a secondary assist on the Cataractes’s first goal of the game in the first period.
In the second, Barbashev recorded his second goal of the season off the rush down the right side of the offensive zone.
Barbashev improves to 2-4-6 after six games this season.
Bryce McConnell-Barker scored his fourth goal of the season but his Soo Greyhounds let a 4-1 lead slip away and needed the shootout before escaping with a 5-4 win over the Saginaw Spirit in OHL play. McConnell-Barker scored his goal off a backhanded shot in the second period for the Greyhounds fourth goal of the game.
It was a mixed game for McConnell-Barker as offensively he was okay scoring his goal on a four shot game but he was also a -1 with a goaltender interference minor in the overtime period and was 3-9 on faceoffs.
McConnell-Barker is 4-5-9 after 13 games for the Greyhounds.
Dylan Roobroeck recorded his third goal of the season but it was not enough to prevent his Oshawa Generals from falling to the Kingston Frontenacs 4-3 in OHL play. Roobroeck scored the Generals first goal of the game, a power-play goal at 15:14 of the first period.
Roobroeck put a shot through the “five-hole” that caught even the announcers off-guard as they needed the replay to be sure of the goal.
Roobroeck’s goal was his first power-play goal of the season as he improves to 3-8-11 after 11 games.
Noah Laba had a primary assist as his Colorado College Tigers improved 5-0 on the season with a 6-2 win over in-state rival Air Force in non-conference play. Laba set up Colorado College’s second goal of the game as they were on the power play.
Laba was credited with two shots and was 9-11 on his faceoffs. The sophomore center improves his season totals to 2-2-4 after four games.
Brody Lamb was scoreless on three shots with a +1 as his top-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers lost to 18th-ranked Wisconsin 3-2 in Big Ten play. Lamb was dropped to third line right wing as his team dropped their third straight game.
Victor Mancini was scoreless on two shots with a +1 as his Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks played to a 2-2 overtime tie with 15th-ranked Ohio State in non-conference play. Nebraska-Omaha remains unbeaten at 2-0-1.
Ty Henricks was scoreless on one shot with a hooking minor as his Muskegon Lumberjacks lost 3-2 in overtime to Rasmus Larsson’s Grey Bay Gamblers in USHL play. Larsson did not register any stats in this one.
Defenseman Hank Kempf did not record any stats as his 11th-ranked Cornell Big Red won their season debut 4-1 over 12th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth in non-conference play. If you don’t remember Kempf, he is a stay-at-home defender who has next to no offense to his game.
Kempf was the Rangers seventh-round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft and sorry to say not even close to being a serious prospect to earn an entry-level contract at this point.
Stick taps to the Maine Black Bears for their emotional 2-1 upset overtime win over the fifth-ranked Quinnipac Bobcats. After the terrible events of the week in their state, the Black Bears gave their fans a bit of a distraction even if it was just for a little bit. #LewistonStrong
