Defenseman Victor Mancini had gone 75 NCAA games without a goal, game seventy-six saw Mancini score his first NCAA goal and boy was a dandy. Mancini’s goal at 4:20 of overtime gave his Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks a 3-2 win over 11th-ranked Western Michigan University in NCHC play.
With the clock in the final minute of overtime, the normally defensive-minded Mancini carried the puck right to the net and beat the Western Michigan goalie to the short side for the goal.
It was Mancini’s first game-winning goal and more importantly gave his Mavericks a win over a highly ranked conference team. Let us hope that this is what gets Mancini even more involved with the offense.
The Rangers are in bad need of solid defenders among their prospect pool. Mancini could be a nice addition if he adds more offense to his already solid defensive play.
Freshman Gabe Perreault had a three-assist game to lead his top-ranked Boston College Eagles over UMass-Lowell 3-2 in Hockey East play. Perreault had two power-play assists and the secondary assist on what proved to be the game winner
Here is the one I liked the most, a primary assist on the Eagles second goal. It was a two-man advantage power play and Perreault showed off his playmaking skills.
Perreault’s other two assists were secondary ones as he extends his scoring streak to six games as he improves his season totals to 1-10-11 after eight games. The ten assists are fourth-best in the NCAA scoring. Teammate Drew Fortescue was credited with one shot and an interference minor.
Bryce McConnell-Barker’s secondary assist with just seven seconds remaining in regulation broke a 2-2 tie as his Soo Greyhounds defeated the Windsor Spitfires 3-2 in OHL play. What was a close game all night came down to a Greyhound power play off a match penalty to Windsor in the last minute of regulation
McConnell-Barker was credited with nine shots (four called dangerous) and he was 10-10 on his face-offs. On the season, McConnell-Barker improves to 4-8-12 in 15 games.
Defenseman Hank Kempf had an assist as his 10th-ranked Cornell Big Red had little trouble with Brown winning 7-1 in ECAC play. The normally defensive Kempf earned his second assist of the season with a secondary assist on Cornell’s first goal of the game.
Even more surprising out of Kempf was that he had a game high +5, now if only they could convince him to take that many shots in a game. Cornell improved to 4-0 on the season with the win.
Right wing Jaroslav Chmelar was scoreless as his ninth-ranked Providence College Friars shut out 16th-ranked University of New Hampshire 2-0 in Hockey East play. For the second straight game Chmelar did not record a single stat.
Right wing Brodie Lamb was scoreless as his sixth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers played to a 3-3 overtime tie with 14th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth. Lamb was credited with just one shot for the entire game.
Center Noah Laba and his Colorado College Tigers were beaten 5-1 by second-ranked University of Denver in an NCHC matchup. Laba was a -1 on zero shots and 9-8 on his faceoffs.
Center Zakary Karpa was scoreless as his 15th-ranked Harvard Crimson were spanked 6-0 by seventh-ranked Quinnipiac in ECAC play. Karpa was credited with two shots with a -1 and a cross-checking minor and was 14-9 on his faceoffs.
Goalie Hugo Ollas did not start but came in off the bench to start the third period as his 20th-ranked Merrimack Warriors fell to the Maine Black Bears 5-4 in Hockey East play. Ollas stopped all eight shots that he faced in the 18:27 that he played.
Ollas is 1-2 on the season with 2.16 goals against and a 0.915 save percentage.
Forward Maxim Barbashev was scoreless as his Shawinigan Cataractes dropped their seventh straight game this time 4-1 to the Drummondville Voltigeurs in QMJHL play. Barbashev was credited with three shots with a -2 and a hooking minor.
Forward Ty Henricks did not record any stats as his Muskegon Lumberjacks were whipped 8-2 by the Waterloo Black Hawks in USHL play. The Lumberjacks fell to fifth place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference with an 8-4 record.
Defenseman Rasmus Lawsson did not record a stat as his Green Bay Gamblers dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to the Chicago Steel in USHL play. The loss dropped the Gamblers into fourth place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference with a 9-5 record.
