Tonight’s First Star Noah Laba Colorado College
It’s a Saturday night with nine New York Ranger prospects in action and leading the party was the guys we are going to call the “four-letter boys” after only having four letters in their last names. Noah Laba of Colorado College and Brody Lamb of Minnesota were key to helping their teams earn their wins.
Write this name down NOAH LABA as this player just might be the steal of the 2022 NHL Entry draft for the New York Rangers. Laba a 6’1 185 lb. sophomore center playing for the Colorado College Tigers is our player to watch for this season.
Colorado is already using him as their first line center with good reason, he is that good at both ends of the ice and if he keeps developing at this pace, expect him to be no worse than a future second line center for the Rangers.
Laba made his season debut on Saturday after sitting out a one-game suspension for being part of a multi-player fight last week. And it was a pretty solid debut for Laba as he scored twice (including the game-winning goal) as he helped the Tigers earn a 6-2 non-conference win over Union College.
Getting right to it as here is a clip of the first goal as at Colorado College they call this “lighting the Laba Lamp”. Watch how Laba sets himself up to receive the pass in shooting position as the Union goalie has no chance to stop this shot.
You will really like Laba’s second goal as you have got to watch carefully as Laba is falling on his follow-through as he fires the puck past the Union goalie. It was a power play goal coming at 8:45 of the second period giving Colorado College a 3-1 lead and proved to be the game-winning goal.
The Rest of the Prospects
Sophomore wing Brody Lamb earned third star honors with a 1-1-2 night to help number one Minnesota defeat the St. Thomas Tommies 3-0 in non-conference play. Lamb had a very good weekend series as he winds up 3-1-4 after his first two games of the season.
In this one Lamb earned the only assist on linemate Jimmy Snuggerud’s third period goal which was Minnesota’s second of the game. Then Lamb added an empty net goal at 19:17 to end the night for Minnesota.
Last season Lamb was 4-4-8 in 39 games total and here he is 3-1-4 after just two. Look for Lamb to have a monster season playing big minutes for Minnesota. One other thing, Lamb can play either wing which will help him down the road.
Forward Ty Henricks had a goal as his Muskegon Lumberjacks defeated the Madison Capitols 5-2 in USHL play. The win earned the Lumberjacks a split of the weekend series with Henricks recording goals in both games.
For Henricks, he improves to 2-1-3 after six games for the Lumberjacks.
Defenseman Victor Mancini was scoreless as his Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks earned a 2-1 win over the Nigara Purple Eagles in non-conference play. Mancini was credited with three shots for the game and a +1 as the Mavericks improved to 2-0.
Defenseman Rasmus Larsson was scoreless on one shot as his Green Bay Gamblers earned a 4-3 overtime win over the Cedar Rapids Roughriders in USHL play. Larsson who is supposed to be an offensive weapon, is 1-3-4 after eight games but is pointless in his last five games.
Junior goalie Hugo Ollas made his season debut for his 13th-ranked Merrimack Warriors, but it wasn’t a happy one as the Warriors dropped a 4-2 non-conference matchup against the Arizona State Sun Devils. Ollas stopped twenty-seven of the thirty shots that he faced in 59:34 of action.
Center Dylan Roobroeck was scoreless on three shots as his Oshawa Generals were spanked 7-1 by the Barrie Colts in OHL play. Roobroeck was a -1 and 6-11 on his faceoffs.
Center Bryce McConnell-Barker and his teammates were shutout by the Owen Sound Attack 4-0 in OHL play and sorry but the kid I call the BoMB did not look good at all as he was credited with four shots but was a -2 and 8-9 on faceoffs.
Exhibition Hockey
Junior defenseman Hank Kempf and his 11th-ranked Cornell Big Red had their season opening game, an exhibition contest against Toronto Metropolitan University. Big Red earned a 6-1 win as Kempf was scoreless on two shots and a +1.
For those who don’t know Kempf, he is a pure “stay-at-home” defenseman who blocks shots and has next to no offense. In 63 NCAA games total, Kempf is 1-9-10 overall.
