Hello New York Ranger Prospects 2025

Gredig lowers boom
Rico Gredig #8 of Switzerland (Matt Zambonin/IIHF)

There really wasn’t much in terms of game action from the New York Rangers prospects on New Year’s Eve. The night was more like “good news” followed by “bad news”

Good News: Drew Fortescue and Gabe Perreault got to advance out of preliminary round play after Canada gifted them a 4-1 win.

Bad News: There has hardly been any production out of either play unless you want to count PIMS. Canada gifted the USA team seven power plays and Team USA did nothing with them.

If Team USA is looking to repeat last year’s goal medal winner, then they better find more offense in a hurry.

Good News:  Rico Gredig and Team Switzerland defeated Kazakhstan 3-1 to avoid having to play in the relegation round. Gredig was only credited with one power play assists but deserved two.

Bad News: Gredig and company get to face Team USA in the quarterfinals on Thursday. To say the Swiss have next to no chance at defeating the USA would be kind.

Watch these highlights as Gredig (wears 8 in white) sets a great screen on the Swiss’s first goal. Then while killing a penalty made the play that set up a shorthanded goal.

Look Gredig is 19, he is 6’1 190 so take full advantage of the changes to college hockey and bring him over with some NIL money. See what he can do with the North American game as he can play left wing and center. If he can play then great sign him off a college roster and send him to Hartford.

Good News: Nathan Aspinall scored his 9th goal of the season, his first in four games as he improves to 9-14-23.

Bad News: His Flint Firebirds lost 6-4 to the Windsor Spitfires to fall back under 500 at 16-17-1-1. It is very hard to get a good read on Aspinall because he plays on a bad team.

He has the Matt Rempe size of 6’7 195 but will he be more than an NHL goon?

Bad News Raoul Boilard missed his third straight game in what is being called a lower-body injury. Boilard who has been the leading scorer among the Ranger prospects reportedly was injured on December 14th with the return timetable projecting that he would mist two to four weeks.

It looks more like the last week of January before Boilard will return.

Good News: Talyn Boyko was sent in exile to play for the Tulsa Oilers (Edmonton ECHL) after a suspect first season with the Rangers ECHL team. Even worse was that Boyko was injured during training camp which saw his stock bottom out.

When Igor Shestyerkin was injured, the Rangers recalled Louie Domingue from Hartford. That opened a roster spot in Hartford and instead of recalling Hugo Ollas from Bloonington (ECHL), the Rangers recalled Boyko who wa 9-3-2 with a very respectable 2.15 goals against and a 0.917 save percentage.

Boyko then went out and earned his first career AHL win with a 32 save shutout to earn his first career AHL win and shutout.

Yes there is bias here as Boyko was someone who as played on bad team after bad team. He is a great person who just so happens to be 6’7.

Hartford has to lead the AHL with three players who are 6’7 and if Matt Rempe is sent back after his suspension that will make it four.

Covering New York Ranger prospects since 2004, I have covered every Ranger prospect drafted over that time. I was lucky enough to have been trained by former Boston Bruins GM Harry Sinden having completed the NHL GM and Scouting Course taught at Sports Management Worldwide as well as the late EJ McGuire who was the director of the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau and was the former coach of the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack
