Aspinall’s Two Goal Night Leads Firebirds

Nathan Aspinall (Flint Firebirds)

Saturday had a much more productive night from the nine New York Rangers prospects who saw action than we had on Friday. Four goals and five assists seems like a ton when compared to the only two goals of last night.

Still the productivity from this years group of prospects leaves a lot to be desired especially as we head down the final two weeks of the college hockey regular season and into the final month of the CHL regular season.

It has been a while since we saw Nathan Aspinall at the top of our report but Aspinall earned the game’s first star with a 2-1-3 performance to help his Flint Firebirds earn a 5-4 win over the Windsor Spitfires in OHL play. Aspinall got his night going  when he directed a pass to a wide open Kaden Pitre for the game’s first goal at 2:06 of the first period.

In the third period after the Spitfires had taken a 3-2 lead, Aspinall tied the game when he picked up a loose puck in front of the net then with a deke went to his backhand and scored an easy goal to tie the game at 3-3 at 1:38 of the period.

It was Aspinall’s 14th goal of the season. And then just 1:12 later at 2:50 of the period, Aspinall put his team up 4-3 when teammate Connor Clattenburg forced a turnover and the puck came to a wide open Aspinall who fired it past the Spitfire goalie for a 4-3 lead. The goal broke an eight game goal-less streak for the Flint forward.

For Aspinall the three point night earned him the game’s first star as he improves to 15-22-37 which ties him for second best among Rangers prospects.

Raoul Boilard (Baie-Comeau Drakker)

Rauol Boilard set up the game-winning goal as his Baie-Comeau Drakkar held off the Rimouski Océanic 4-3 in QMJHL play. In the third period with the score tied at 3-3, Boilard picked up a loose puck and carried it into the Drakkar offensive zone where he fed Alex Bernier who scored to put his team in front for good.

Boilard also had a secondary assist on the Drakkar’s first goal to give him a two-point night. The two points improved Boilard to 10-27-37 (good for second among Rangers prospects) on the season.

Brody Lamb finished off his weekend with an empty net goal as his fourth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated eighth-ranked Ohio State 6-3 in Big Ten play. Lamb’s goal was Minnesota’s fifth goal of the game won Minnesota fans a free scoop of custard with his third goal of the weekend.

Lamb’s 16th goal of the season was part of a two shot +1 night as he improves to 16-9-25. Minnesota’s win moved them into first place in the Big Ten with a road series next weekend at Penn State to finish off the Big Ten regular season.

Win next weekend and Minnesota earns a first round bye in the Big Ten tournament.

Kempf and parents
Kempf (Caroline Sherman)

Hank Kempf playing in his final regular season home game as a member of the Cornell Big Red had a goal as they shutout St. Lawrence 6-0 in ECAC play. Kempf scored Cornell’s fifth goal of the game in the third period for just his second goal of the season.

While Kempf improved to 2-5-7 on the season, the win guaranteed that Cornell will host a first round ECAC playoff game. With just two games left in their regular season, Cornell can still reach as high as third in the standings but will not finish any lower than seventh.

Gabe Perreault had two assists while Drew Fortescue was scoreless as their second-ranked Boston College Eagles spanked Vermont 6-3 in ECAC play. Perreault had a secondary assist on Boston College’s second goal and the primary assist on the Eagles third goal.

The assists helped improve Perreault’s season totals to 12-29-41 which is second on Boston College but leads all the Rangers prospects in scoring. It was part of a 0-2-2 two shots with a +3 night for Perreault.

Fortescue was credited with one shot for the game. Boston College still remains in first place in the Hockey East conference standings with three games left in their regular season.

E. J. Emery returned to the 18th-ranked North Dakota lineup as they whipped on Minnesota-Duluth 6-1 in NCHC play. Emery remained scoreless for his 28th straight game but was called for three separate minor penalties.

North Dakota is one point behind third place Omaha and has a one point lead over fourth place Denver in the NCHC standings with four games remaining.

Zakary Karpa was scoreless as Harvard held off RPI 3-2 in ECAC play. Karpa was 7-8 on his faceoffs which was his only recorded stat of the game.

Harvard is sitting in seventh place in the ECAC standings five points behind Cornell with just two games left in their regular season.

Did Not Play

Noah Laba missed his third straight game with what is being called a “lower-body injury” for his Colorado College Tigers. This is the second time this season, Laba has missed three games due to an  injury as it was a “lower-body injury” that forced him to miss time earlier this season.

Ty Henricks was not in the lineup for Western Michigan this evening. In Henrick’s case, it is being hinted that the flu bug is the reason why.

Rasmus Larsson was not in the Northern Michigan lineup for the second straight night. No reason has been given as to why but in his case injury is suspected.
