Henricks Scores Twice in Losing Effort

A much more productive night for the New York Rangers prospects on a busy night. We said good bye to Hank Kempf as his draft rights were traded to Colorado as part of the Ryan Lindgren trade.

Rasmus Larsson saw his freshman season end while he was injured and 2024 first round pick E. J. Emery is out with an undisclosed injury. If the season were to end tomorrow only three NCAA and the two CHL prospects would advance to the post-season.

Everyone else needs to win their league’s tournament and the automatic invite to the NCAAs.

Our star tonight is Ty Henricks as the freshman left wing for fourth-ranked Western Michigan posted a career best two goal night. Henricks and Western Michigan dropped the finale of their weekend series with 18th-ranked North Dakota 4-3 in overtime in NCHC play.

Henricks scored twice in the third period during a span of 2:03 to first tie and then give his team a 3-2 lead. The first goal came at even strength when Henricks would find a loose puck just outside the slot and he would bang it home for the goal at 8:31.

It was his fourth goal of the season, and it tied the game up at 2-2. His second goal came at 10:34 as Henricks fired a one-time shot past the North Dakota goalie to give Western Michigan a 3-2 lead.

Not a bad night for Henricks who besides his 2-0-2 came on five shots with a +2 to improve his season totals to 5-5-10. The point in overtime ensured that Western Michigan wins the NCHC regular season title outright and they will begin the NCHC playoffs as the number one seed.

Perreault
Gabe Perreault (Boston College)

Gabe Perreault had a goal during regulation as his top-ranked Boston College Eagles would play to a 1-1 overtime tie with New Hampshire. Boston College would pick up the extra point by winning the shootout 3-2 to pick up the extra point.

With his team trailing 1-0 in the third period and on a power play, Perreault would pick up his 13th goal of the season with his team when he fired the puck almost on the goal line to tie the game up at 1-1.

The goal was Perreault’s 13th, and third power play goal helped send the game into first overtime then into the shootout. Perreault shooting second for Boston College during the shootout would score on the shootout.

The goal improves Perreault to 13-31-44 on the season as while he leads the Rangers prospects in scoring, Perreault is seventh in NCAA scoring and second in assists. Teammate Drew Fortescue was scoreless and this leaves Boston College with just one game left on their Hockey East schedule.

They need to earn a regulation win (three points) to win the Hockey East conference regular season outright. If they do that they get a bye in the first round of the Hockey East playoffs and the first overall seed that goes with it.

Nathan Aspinall scored what proved to be the game-winning goal as his Flint Firebirds defeated the Erie Otters 6-3 in OHL action. Aspinall scored his 17th goal of the season when he jumped into the crease and poked a loose puck into the net to give his team a 4-2 lead.

The goal extended Aspinall’s scoring streak to three games (2-3-5) as he improved his season totals to 17-25-42 on his third game-winning goal of the season. Flint has won five straight games.

Brody Lamb was scoreless as his second-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers bounced back to earn a 5-3 win over the 15th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions in Big Ten play. However the loss Minnesota had in Friday’s game against Penn State proved costly as while they tied with Michigan State for the regular season conference title.

Michigan State holds the tiebreaker and will get the first round bye in the Big Ten Playoffs. Minnesota will host Notre Dame in a best-of-three playoff series starting next Friday night.

Karpa Head
Zakary Karpa (Harvard Crimson)

Zakary Karpa, playing in his final regular season game for the Harvard Crimson, had an assist as they played to a 3-3 overtime tie against Brown. Brown would win the shootout round 2-0.

Karpa earned the primary assist on Harvard’s first goal as he finished his regular season 0-6-6. Harvard will host RPI next Friday in a single elimination game to determine who advances to the ECAC quarterfinals.

Rauol Boilard had the primary assist on his Baie-Comeau Drakkar’s only goal as they lost to the Rimouski Oceanic 3-1 in QMJHL play. Boilard improves his season totals to 10-28-38 on the season.

Jackson Dorrington was scoreless as his Northeastern Huskies got spanked 7-1 by the UConn Huskies in Hockey East play. Dorrington had a rough night on one shot with a -3 and a roughing minor.

The loss was the third straight for Northeastern who with two games left in their regular season are in ninth place in the Hockey East conference. They need to win both those remaining games and hope Merrimack loses both of theirs to host a first-round playoff game.

So Long Hank

Hank Kempf saw his draft rights traded to Colorado as part of the Ryan Lindgren/Jimmy Vesey deal. The Rangers 2021 seventh round pick out of Cornell was not under serious consideration to be signed by the Rangers.

Kempf is a stay-at-home defenseman who has a limited offensive upside as he finished his time as a Rangers prospect with a 4-13-17 mark.

Did Not Play

Rasmus Larsson saw his freshman season at Northern Michigan come to an end with him missing the final four games of their season. Northern Michigan as the last place team in the CCHA did not qualify to take part in the league playoffs.

Shame that Larsson got hurt when he did as he was without a point for his first 25 games this season before finishing with three goals in his last four games (3-0-3).

E. J. Emery was not in the North Dakota lineup for the second straight game and according to this report by Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald, he is injured. Still trying to find details on his injury.

Covering New York Ranger prospects since 2004, I have covered every Ranger prospect drafted over that time. I was lucky enough to have been trained by former Boston Bruins GM Harry Sinden having completed the NHL GM and Scouting Course taught at Sports Management Worldwide as well as the late EJ McGuire who was the director of the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau and was the former coach of the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack
