There has not been much to talk about forward Ty Henricks the Rangers second pick in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. He has had a mostly quiet season so far but Saturday provided a glimpse of what he might do if he develops fully. Henricks who plays for the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the USHL earned first star honors thanks to a two-goal night as the Lumberjacks defeated the Sioux Falls Stampede 6-2.
(Update 1:10 AM PDT, Muskegon says that they believe Henricks will also be credited for scoring their second goal of the game to give him his first USHL career hat trick. From their game report here:
Only one goal came in the second period and it belonged to the Lumberjacks. Cooper Pierson (Zionsville, IN) won a faceoff back to Xavier Veilleux (L’Anceinne-Lorrette, QC, CAN) on the near side of the offensive zone. Veilleux tapped the puck to Anderson who fired a shot on net. Henricks was positioned to redirect the shot to the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season, and to regain the lead 2-1 for Muskegon.)
Sorry there isn’t any video of either goals to show you reports from the game say that the goals Henricks scored were right in the crease/slot areas where Henricks used his physical play to score with. His team up was 2-1 in the third period when Henricks his first goal. Henricks had blocked a teammates shot accidently but he grabbed the puck in the slot and put into the back of the net to make it 3-1 for Muskegon at 8:56 on an even strength goal. This goal would prove to also be the game-winner for his team, his first game-winner this season.
Less than two minutes later, Henricks would make it 4-1 for his team when he out-fought a couple of Stampede players for the puck in the neutral zone. From there he carried the puck right to the net and beat the Stampede goalie for the goal at 10:24 (also even strength).
For the young forward the goals were his fifth and sixth goals of the season improving his season totals to 6-4-10 with the 10 points being a new career high in points. Henricks has a signed letter of intent to attend Western Michigan next season so we have five years to see if he does in fact develop into a power forward.
Henricks is listed as a 6’3 215 lb. left wing who is only 18 years old so he is still growing in his body. Going to be interesting to watch his development.
Gabe Perreault continued his scoring spree with his ninth multi-point game of the season to lead his third-ranked Boston College Eagles to a 5-4 win over tenth-ranked Providence College in Hockey East action. The first-year student forward was 1-1-2 to improve his team-leading point totals to 5-20-25.
Perreault got his Eagles going when he set up linemate Will Smith for a power play goal at 6:41 of the first period and a 1-0 lead. The Eagles were on a five-minute power play due to Providence’s leading scorer and fellow Ranger’s prospect Jaroslav Chmelar was called for a “checking from behind” major penalty (and game misconduct) at 4:47 of the first.
With the Eagles still on the same power play, Perreault gave his Eagles a 2-0 lead when he finished off a semi-breakaway with a backhand shot at the 9:00 mark of the period.

After Providence scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead, fellow prospect defenseman Drew Fortescue earned his first NCAA career assist. Fortescue carried the puck from his defensive zone to the offensive zone where he dropped the puck off to Cutter Gauthier who fired a one-timer to tied the game at 3-3 at 8:38 of the second period.
For the game Perreault was 1-1-2 on four shots with a roughing minor. Fortescue improved to 3-1-4 for the season after going 0-1-1 on one shot with a +1. In addition to leading his team in scoring, Perreault is now third in overall NCAA scoring, he is second in the NCAA in assists and he is the leading freshman scorer.
Maxim Barbashev earned third star of the game honors after scoring his seventh goal of the season as his Rimouski Oceanic defeated the Quebec Remparts 4-0 in QMJHL action. Barbashev scored Rimouski’s third goal of the game while his team was on the power play. The Oceanic left wing improved to 5-3-8 since being traded to the Oceanic on November 23rd.
Overall Barbashev is 7-10-17 on the season split between the two teams.
Dylan Roobroeck saw his eight-game scoring streak stopped on Friday evening so he started a new streak with a two-assist performance on Saturday as his Oshawa Generals beat the Windsor Spitfires 6-3 in OHL play. Roobroeck earned the secondary assist on the Generals first and third goals.
Roobroeck was 0-2-2 on two shots with a -1 and he was 7-8 on his faceoffs as he improved his season totals to 6-17-23 in 26 games.
Noah Laba was scoreless on two shots but was an excellent 13-2 on his faceoffs as his Colorado College Tigers upset top-ranked North Dakota 3-2 to sweep the weekend series. Laba who is the Tigers first-line center just dominated the faceoff circle in the win.
And to think he is just a sophomore so he is seriously working his way towards that Rangers Entry Level Contract. At this rate, I can see Laba leaving school after his junior season as defensively he is ready for the pro ranks but his scoring is what is holding him back for now as he lacks consistency on offense.
Rasmus Larsson was scoreless as his Green Bay Gamblers earned a 6-2 win over the Chicago Steel in USHL play. The Gamblers jumped right back into first place of the USHL’s Eastern Conference as they extended their unbeaten in regulation streak to five games at 4-0-0-1.
Victor Mancini was scoreless on three shots as his Omaha Mavericks played to a 2-2 overtime tie with 15th-ranked St. Cloud State in NCHC play. The Mavericks would earn the extra point in the standings by winning the shootout 1-0.
Brody Lamb was scoreless as his ninth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers played to a 1-1 overtime tie with the Ohio State Buckeyes in Big Ten action. Ohio State would earn the extra point in the standing by winning the shootout 1-0.
