Just three New York Ranger prospects were in action on Saturday, and it was an entertaining night. For the two Rangers prospects playing in the Canadian juniors, their playoff seeding was set.
For Ty Henricks and his Western Michigan Broncos, it took a third period rally 22 seconds into the second overtime before they defeated the Denver Pioneers 4-3 to win the NCHC Frozen Playoff. The win also gave the Broncos the automatic invite to the NCAA tournament even though they had clinched a spot in the tournament during the regular season,
Henricks did not score and was credited with just one shot as a member of the Broncos fourth line. Still the freshman gets to have been a member of the Penrose Cup (NCHC regular season champions) along with Frozen Playoff champions on his resume.
Sunday he and his Broncos will find out which regional they will be sent to as the number one seed of that regional.
Nathan Aspinall earned second star honors with a three-assist performance to help his Flint Firebirds rally to defeat their archrivals the Saginaw Spirit 6-3 in OHL action. The win clinched the sixth seed in OHL’s Western Conference playoffs where they will face the Kitchener Rangers.
With his team trailing 3-1 in the second period, Aspinall got the comeback going earning the primary assist on Sam McCue’s power play goal at 15:53. As the game made it to the third period, Aspinall earned his second assist on Urban Podrekar’s game tying goal at 10:41.
Aspinall earned his third assist when he set up Christopher Thibodeau’s goal which put the Firebirds in front to stay 4-3 at 13:52. The Firebirds would add two more goals to earn the 6-3 win.
For Aspinall his 0-3-3 night came on a night when he was not credited with any shots and a +1. The points improved Aspinall’s season’s totals to 17-30-47 which ties him with Gabe Perreault but since Aspinall has more goals it makes him the prospect leader in scoring.
Raoul Boilard had an assist as his Baie-Comeau Drakkar ended their QMJHL regular season with a 7-5 win over the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. Boilard earned the primary assist on Drakkar’s fifth goal, a power play goal which at the time put them up 5-3.
For Boilard, the assist was part of a not-so great day as he took a high-sticking minor in the first period which led to the Saguenéens’ first goal of the game. Boilard did not register a single shot but wound up a -2 and was 6-9 on his faceoffs.
He ended his regular season with a 12-34-46 record, which was down from last year’s 22-40-62. His Drakkar finished the QMJHL regular season unbeaten in their last six games (5-0-1) and are going into the QMJHL Eastern Conference playoffs as the number four seed hosting the Cape Breton Eagles starting next Friday at home.
Congrats Noah
Noah Laba did not wait long to show the Rangers why they needed to sign him. He made his AHL debut Friday night and scored his first career professional goal, a shorthanded marker.
