When it comes to college hockey, it is hard to top the annual Beanpot Tournament played in Boston. This year’s version featured four New York Rangers prospects in action and it was fun watching them in action.
Gabe Perreault and Drew Fortescue led their number one Boston College Eagles up against Jackson Dorrington’s Northeastern Huskies in the nightcap of this year’s opening night. All three registered at least one assist as Boston College spanked Northeastern 8-2 to advance to next week’s championship final.
The fans were barely in their seats when Drew Fortescue earned a secondary assist on Boston College’s first goal coming just 46 seconds into the contest. After recovering the puck below his goal line, Fortescue moved the puck up to James Hagens who gave it to Teddy Stiga who scored for a 1-0 lead that Boston College would never give up.
For Fortescue, the assist was his ninth of the season as Fortescue improved to 0-9-9 and a new career best in points. Boston College would add a second first period goal to make it 2-0 before Northeastern would get on the scoreboard.
It would be Jackson Dorrington who helped get Northeastern on the scoreboard as it was his shot that was deflected in for the goal. It is interesting to note how the tv announcers call Dorrington a “defensive” defenseman after most scouting reports called him an offensive one.
But if you watch the clip, it is hard not to like Dorrington’s shot from the point as it was clearly heading to the net until Ben Poitras deflected it past the Boston College goalie. Ignore the first shot as it was the second one that went in.
FIRST CAREER GOAL AND IT’S A BEANPOT BANGER.

If that is the kind of shot Dorrington has from the point, then he needs to use it more often. It was Dorrington’s ninth assist and eleventh overall point of the season (2-9-11).
Boston College would build up a 5-1 lead after two periods before Gabe Perreault would join the point party and boy does this guy know how to pass the puck. Perreault would carry the puck into the offensive zone, he would run into a loose stick on the ice yet somehow, he gets the puck onto the stick of a wide-open Andre Gasseau for an easy goal.
Perreault had drawn the Northeastern goalie to follow him, and he put the puck between the legs of the Northeastern defenseman with a “no look” pass. Perreault had his back to Gasseau the entire time but gave him the puck perfectly.
That assist was his 24th of the season improving his season numbers to 9-24-33 but he was not done. Perreault would add a second assist when he fed teammate Ryan Leonard who promptly scored Boston College’s seventh goal of the game.
This assist was his 25th as Perreault regained the Rangers prospects scoring lead with his 9-25-34. The points moved Perrault into a tie for sixth overall in the NCAAs and his 25 assists are second best.
Boston College moves on to face eighth-ranked Boston University next Monday night after BU spanked Zakary Kapra’s Harvard Crimson 7-1 in the opener.
Zakary Karpa returned to the Harvard lineup after missing two games. Karpa was scoreless on one shot as he was moved to fourth line left wing for this game.
