A super quiet Saturday night saw two of the least productive prospects breakthrough for assists to help their team. Just five New York Ranger prospects saw action on Saturday night.
Defenseman Rasmus Lawsson was seen as an offensive-minded defender after the Rangers selected him in the fifth round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. At 6’3 200 and coming off a 16-18-34 season with Västerås IK J20 of the Swedish Under-20 league, much was expected of him when he came over to play for the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL this season.
It turned out that Lawsson’s offense has not caught up to his defensive play (which has been very good) as entering Saturday’s play, Lawsson was just 1-6-7 in 27 games for the Gamblers. The young Swede had gone six games without a point and 25 games without a goal.
Lawsson set up Geno Carcone for what proved to be the game winning goal as Green Bay knocked off USA Hockey NTDP 5-1 in USHL play. The Gamblers second goal of the game was all they really needed and for Lawsson it was his seventh assist and eighth overall point.
Hank Kempf broke an eight-game scoreless streak with his third assist of the season as his 17th-ranked Cornell Big Red played to a 2-2 overtime tie against 13th-ranked Arizona State in championship of the Adirondack Winter Invitational.
Arizona State would win the shootout and was named tournament champion. For Kempf, he earned his first point since an assist against Brown on November 4th.
He actually was credited with an overall decent game going 0-1-1 on one shot and a +1 as he was also the top pair left defenseman for Cornell.
Maxim Barbashev was scoreless as his Rimouski Oceanic knocked off the Quebec Remparts 5-2 in QMJHL play. Barbashev was credited with three shots with a +1 and two minor penalties (roughing and tripping).
Ty Henricks was scoreless on one shot as his Muskegon Lumberjacks earned a 5-4 overtime win over the Youngstown Phantoms in USHL action. Henricks was the starting left wing for the Lumberjacks who were playing in their third game in three nights.
I really dislike seeing the USHL and the junior leagues playing these three games in three nights as it is high risk with little reward by the time you have reached the third game.
Zakary Karpa was scoreless as his Harvard Crimson returned from their holiday break with a 5-2 loss to rival Princeton in ECAC action. Karpa was credited with three shots and was 8-11 on his faceoffs.

Providence forward Jaroslav Chmelar sat out his 11th-ranked Providence Friars game against Brown serving a suspension that was the result of a game misconduct he received back on December 10th. He should be eligible to return when Providence faces Simon Fraser in an exhibition game on January 7th.
Bryce McConnell-Barker missed his fifth straight game as he is out with a concussion for his Soo Greyhounds. No update has been given as to his status.
