It was a mixed bag of things for the New York Rangers prospects with some of the NCAA prospects playing in their regular season finales this weekend. Others still have another week to go, and one prospect’s season is about to end.

Nine prospects did see action and as it has been for much of the season, it was Gabe Perreault leading the way once again.

Gabe Perreault had two assists as his top-ranked Boston College Screaming Eagles moved closer to clinching the regular season Hockey East title. Playing against New Hampshire, Boston College spotted New Hampshire a 1-0 first period lead before scoring four unanswered goals to earn a 4-1 win.

In the second period, Perreault had the primary assist on Boston College’s first goal, an even-strength goal that tied the game at 1-1. It was Perreault’s 30th assist on the season and 42 overall points.

With his team up 2-1 in the third period, Perreault had the only assist on Boston College’s third goal which put the game away. For Perreault it was his 31st assist, his 43rd point as he moved back into a tie for the Boston College team lead (he leads Rangers prospects) at 12-31-43.

Perreault sits sixth in the NCAA scoring race and is second in assists. He is 17 points behind what he did last season.

Teammate Drew Fortescue had primary assist on Boston College’s fourth goal, an empty net goal with just 2:37 remaining in the game. It was the defenseman’s tenth assist and tenth overall point.

The win puts Boston College up five points over second place Maine, any combination of six points will give Boston College the Hockey East regular season title and overall first seed in the playoffs.

Ty Henricks (Western Michigan)

Ty Henrick may have spent much of his freshman season at fourth-ranked Western Michigan University but after Friday night he can add a new word to his playing resume: Champion. Henricks was scoreless as his Western Michigan Broncos defeated 18th-ranked North Dakota 6-4 to claim the program’s first ever regular season championship.

Henricks was credited with two shots and a slashing minor as his Broncos won the NCHC’s Penrose Cup and clinched the top seed in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff tournament. The even better news for the Broncos is their 24th win of the season has also ensured that the Broncos will be headed to the NCAA tournament as well.

Nathan Aspinall had an assist as his Flint Firebirds defeated the Guelph Storm 5-3 in OHL action. The win was the fourth straight for the Firebirds who are sitting in sixth place in the OHL’s Western Conference.

With ten games left in the OHL’s regular season, the Firebirds have not clinched a playoff spot just yet and if they do make the OHL playoffs they will remain in sixth place. For Aspinall the assist gives him a 16-25-41 season total which is an improvement over last season’s 18-16-34.

Zakary Karpa was scoreless with no shots and a -1 as his Harvard Crimson defeated Yale 4-3 in ECAC play. The win moves Harvard into seventh place in the ECAC with just one last regular season game left to play in Karpa’s career.

Hank Kempf was scoreless as his Cornell Big Red dropped a 4-1 decision to Union in ECAC play. Cornell has one last regular season game remaining as they are currently sixth in the ECAC three points better than Harvard.

Brody Lamb was scoreless as his second-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers lost in overtime to 15th-ranked Penn State in Big Ten play. The loss dropped Minnesota into a first place tie with Michigan State with both schools each having one remaining regular season game left.

There has not been anything from the Big Ten as to what will happen in the event of a tie for first place and the first round bye that goes with it. If regulation wins are the first tiebreaker, then currently Minnesota has the edge over Michigan State 13-12.

Jackson Dorrington was scoreless as his Northeastern Huskies lost to UConn 5-2 in Hockey East play. The loss drops Northeastern into ninth place in the Hockey East standings with three regular season games left.

At best Northeastern can finish as high as sixth but the more likely scenario is they will remain in ninth place. That would have Northeastern playing in a one-game playoff on March 12th to see which teams advance to the Hockey East quarterfinals.

If you are a betting person, then bet on seeing Dorrington in a Hartford Wolfpack uniform by March 14th.

Rauol Boilard was scoreless as his Baie-Comeau Drakkar lost 5-2 to the Rimouski Oceanic in QMJHL play. The Drakkar have clinched a spot in the QMJHL playoffs as they try to hold on to the fourth seed in the QMJHL’s Eastern Conference.

Did Not Play

Rasmus Larsson missed his third straight game for what is believed to be an injury. He will not play on Saturday as his Northern Michigan Wildcats will finish their season.

The Wildcats as the last place team in the CCHA are not going to qualify for the league playoffs as only the top eight teams will (Northern Michigan is in ninth place)

E.J. Emery did not play for his 18th-ranked North Dakota Fighting Hawks. No official reason was given but odds are good considering Emery was suspended for fighting and missed last Friday’s game.

On Saturday upon his return, Emery took three minor penalties while going scoreless for the 29th straight game.

Covering New York Ranger prospects since 2004, I have covered every Ranger prospect drafted over that time. I was lucky enough to have been trained by former Boston Bruins GM Harry Sinden having completed the NHL GM and Scouting Course taught at Sports Management Worldwide as well as the late EJ McGuire who was the director of the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau and was the former coach of the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack
