Lamb Leads Gophers to Comeback Win

Brody Lamb (Minnesota Golden Gophers)
Brody Lamb started a third period comeback with a shorthanded goal as his fourth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers (13-2-1) rallied to defeat Alaska 5-2 in non-conference play. With his team trailing 2-1 at the start of the third period and having to kill off a penalty, Lamb forced a turnover at the blue line and went on the rush.

With some help of one of the Alaska defenders who deflected the puck in, Lamb scored his 10th goal of the season just 38 seconds into the third period to tie the game up at 2-2. It was the first career shorthanded goal for the junior forward who has been moved up to the first line right wing with his play.

The game’s first star Lamb had another good scoring chance earlier in the game, but the puck rolled off his stick while causing an Alaskan player to take a minor penalty. Lamb would go on to earn a secondary assist on what proved to be the game-winning goal less than five minutes later.

For the game, Lamb was 1-1-2 on three shots with a +2 as he improves his season totals to 10-7-17. The leading goal scorer for the Gophers and third overall, Lamb is tied for ninth overall nationally in points and tied for third in goals scored.

The junior forward is starting to push his way into earning that Ranger contract with the start he is having. Last season it took him 39 games to score twelve goals, and he reached 10 in 15 games.

Raoul Boilard was scoreless as his Baie-Comeau Drakkar (16-8-1-1) needed the shootout before earning a 1-0 win over the Shawinigan Cataractes in QMJHL play. This was one of the more entertaining games of the day as these two teams traded shots all game long but only one puck went in including in the shootout.

Boilard was not credited with any shots but was credited with two hits and was 5-10 on his faceoffs. Boilard remains the leading scorer among the Rangers prospects at 5-16-21.

Zakary Karpa was scoreless as his Harvard Crimson (8-3-4-1) defeated the Merrimack Warriors on day two of the Friendship Four in Belfast Ireland. Karpa was moved up to the second line center spot but other than going 10-14 on his faceoffs did not record any stats.

Hank Kempf had an assist as his 11th-ranked Cornell Big Red (9-4-2-3) played to a 3-3 overtime tie with 18th ranked Quinnipiac at the annual Frozen Apple game at Madison Square Garden. Kempf earned a secondary assist on Cornell’s first goal of the game just 2:14 into the first period.

The senior defenseman was 0-1-1 on one shot with a +1 and an interference minor as this game between ECAC conference rivals was played as a non-conference game. Kempf improved to 0-3-3 on the season.

E. J. Emery was scoreless as his 15th-ranked North Dakota Fighting Hawks (7-7-1) played to a 3-3 overtime tie with Bemidji State in a non-conference matchup. Emery was credited with one shot on goal and a -2.

Ty Henricks earned a secondary assist as his seventh-ranked Western Michigan Broncos (9-2-1) lost to sixth-ranked Michigan 2-1 in non-conference play. The loss snapped a seven-game unbeaten streak for Western.

Henricks improved to 1-3-4 on the season but he has gone eleven games without scoring a goal.

Rasmus Larsson was scoreless as his Northern Michigan Wildcats (1-12-1 CCHA 0-7-1-0) lost to Augustana 4-1 in CCHA play. Larsson was dressed as an extra forward but wound up taking shifts at his normal defense position.

The Wildcats are winless in their last eleven games (0-10-1-0).
