Friday saw 10 New York Ranger prospects in action as we got closer to the holiday break. There was some more offense this evening led by the guy who I gave the nickname last season “The Magician” AKA Gabe Perreault.
If any of you remember current Montreal Canadian head coach Martin St. Louis in his prime then that is the player that Perreault is almost an exact clone for. Perreault may not have the biggest of bodies but that doesn’t keep him from going into traffic with the puck.
But what Perreault does with the puck on his stick is truly magic as the Northeastern Huskies found out the hard way. Perreault with a two-assist night as his third -ranked Boston College Eagles shut out the Huskies 3-0 in Hockey East play. On Boston College’s first goal, Perreault faked like he was going to shoot the puck drawing the Huskies goalie towards him and then he sent a pass to the right side of the goal for an easy goal by teammate Ryan Leonard.
On Boston College’s third goal, it was Perreault who started the play that got the puck to linemate James Hagens who fed it to Leonard for his second goal of the game and the Huskies were done.
Perreault’s 0-2-2 on one shot with a +2 improved his team-leading totals to 6-12-18 which is also good for fourth overall in the NCAA. Teammate Drew Fortescue was scoreless as the sophomore defenseman was credited with a blocked shot (ninth of the season) for his only stat of the game.
Brody Lamb had a goal as his fourth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers (11-2 Big 10 4-0-1-0) defeated Notre Dame 6-3 in Big 10 play. Lamb opened the scoring for the Gophers when he “one-timed” a shot past the Notre Dame goalie for an even strength goal at 6:30 of the first period.
It was his team-leading (and prospect leading) ninth goal of the season as he improved to 9-5-14 in 13 games. Last season Lamb had 12 goals for the entire season in 39 games, so he is going to blow past that number.
Noah Laba had two assists, but it wasn’t enough as his eighth-ranked Colorado College Tigers (8-2-1 NCHC 1-2-1-1) fell 3-2 to 10th-ranked St. Cloud State in NCHC action. Laba, with his first points since returning from injury, had a primary assist and secondary assist on the two Colorado College goals.
The secondary assist came on the team’s first goal which was a power play goal in the second period. The primary assist was on the second goal which came with the extra attacker in the third period.
Laba is still trying to find his game after missing five games with a lower body injury besides the 0-2-2 was credited with one shot and a +1 while going 7-6 on his faceoffs. The junior center is 1-8-9 on the season.
Ty Henricks had a primary assist as his ninth-ranked Western Michigan Broncos (7-1-1 NCHC 4-0-1) defeated Minnesota-Duluth 5-2 in NCHC play. Henricks set up linemate Garrett Szydlowski for an even-strength goal that broke a 1-1 tie and put the Broncos in front for good.
The assist broke a six-game scoreless streak for Henricks who is 1-2-3 in nine games as a freshman.
E. J. Emery was scoreless with a blocked shot as his 14th-ranked North Dakota Fighting Hawks (6-6) needed overtime to defeat Robert Morris 4-3 in non-conference play. Emery, who is just 0-1-1 on offense, has 15 blocked shots in 12 games.
Same two teams will play on Saturday,
Raoul Boilard saw his scoring streak stopped at five games as his Baie-Comeau Drakkar lost vis the shootout 3-2 to the Chicoutimi Saguenéens in QMJHL play. Boilard, who is the leading scorer among the Ranger prospects at 5-15-20 was 3-3-6 over his streak.
For the game, Boilard was credited with one shot but struggled with his faceoffs going 5-12 for the game. It dropped his season faceoff totals to 54.5% as the Drakkar dropped to 15-7-1-1 which is fourth in the QMJHL’s Eastern Conference.
Hank Kempf was scoreless as his seventh-ranked Cornell Big Red (3-2-2) dropped a 3-1 decision to the 18th-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats in ECAC play. Kempf was credited with one shot and two blocked shots as Cornell is winless in their last three games (0-2-1).
Nathan Aspinall returned to the Flint Firebirds lineup after missing four games with a lower body injury he suffered against the Saginaw Spirit on November 9th. Aspinall and his teammates found themselves facing the Spirit on Friday night and this one wasn’t pretty at all as the Spirit whipped them 8-1 in OHL play.
Aspinall was scoreless on two shots with a -2 as his team fell to 9-12-0-1 and in last place in the OHL’s West Division.
Zakary Karpa was scoreless as his Harvard Crimson fell to 20th-ranked UMass 5-3 in non-conference play. Karpa was credited with three shots with a -2 and was 8-5 on his faceoffs.
Harvard fell to 2-3-1 on the season.
