Roobroeck Two Goals Earn NYE OT Winner

Dylan Roobroeck (Oshawa Generals)

The New York Rangers prospects that saw action on New Years Eve had a mixed bag of results and bad news to show. The good was watching Dylan Roobroeck score both the game-tying and then overtime-winning goals for his Oshawa Generals.

The bad news was learning that 2021 fifth-round pick right wing Jaroslav Chmelar of the Providence Friars suffered a ripped wrist tendon back on November 18th that required surgery (stick tap to Alan Selvaka). It is being reported that Chmelar will miss at least six weeks which puts his possible return to mid-to-late February.

It is a disappointing blow for the sophomore right wing from Nove Mesto nad Metuji in Czechia as he was tied for the team lead in scoring at 5-9-14. If one looks at the schedule then Chmelar at best will return sometime between February 17th and March 1st.

In game action, Dylan Roobroeck ended his 2023 on a bang earning first star honors when he tied the score with a goal at 18:42 of the third period and then finished off with the game-winning goal at 1:09 of overtime to lead his Oshawa Generals to a 4-3 overtime win over the North Bay Battalion in OHL action.

Late in the third period with his team trailing 3-2. Roobroeck set himself up in the middle of the slot and upon receiving a pass “one-timed” a shot past the North Bay goalie to tie the game at 3-3 at 18:42 of the third/ It was his ninth goal of the season and sent the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Roobroeck would send his team home with the win as he finished off a “2-on-1” with teammate Luca D’Amato with an easy tap-in goal just 1:09 into the overtime session. It was Roobroeck’s tenth goal of the season and his second game-winning goal.

For the game, Roobroeck was 2-0-2 on five shots and he was 11-7 on his faceoffs. With the two goals, Roobroeck improved to 10-19-29 on the season.

At the World Under-20 Championships, defenseman Drew Fortescue had an assist on one shot as Team USA clinched the top seed for Group B with a 10-2 spanking of Adam Sykora’s Team Slovakia. Fortescue set up Roger McGroarty for Team USA’s fifth goal of the game. It was Fortescue’s fourth assist and point of the tournament.

Fortescue also was called for two minor penalties (delay of game and roughing) to go along with a +1 on 17:00 of play. Teammate Gabe Perreault was scoreless on one shot in 15:19 of ice-time.

For Slovakia, Adam Sykora was scoreless on six shots with a -3 in 17:35 of ice time. Team USA will face Latvia on Tuesday in one of the quarterfinal matchups while Slovakia gets to play Finland.

Zakary Karpa had the lone bright spot for his Harvard Crimson as they dropped a 4-2 non-conference game with UConn on Sunday. Karpa scored on a breakaway for Harvard’s second goal of the game at 9:42 of the third period to pull his team to within one goal at 3-2. Karpa blocked a pass from the point and then took off on a breakaway to score.

It was the junior’s second goal of the season but it was the last hurrah for Harvard as UConn would add an empty net goal to earn the 4-2 win. Karpa besides the goal was credited with the one shot and was 9-11 on faceoffs.

Maxim Barbashev was scoreless on two shots with a -1 as his Rimouski Oceanic earned a 4-3 overtime win over the Quebec Remparts in QMJHL play.

Hugo Ollas was the back up goalie for his Merrimack Warriors in their non-conference matchup against winless Stonehill. For most of the season Ollas had been alternating starts with Zachary Borgiel so this was a bit of a surprise.

Ollas has been inconsistent so in a way this was kind of overdue so we will see on Tuesday who gets the start in their non-conference matchup with Holy Cross.

Bryce McConnell-Barker missed his sixth game due to suffering from a concussion.
