Ten New York Ranger prospects hit the ice on Saturday night with one prospect Brody Lamb showing why we want to see him have the kind of breakout season that we believe he is capable of having.
Lamb and his fifth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers welcomed the St. Thomas Tommies to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul Minnesota and they jumped all over them for a 6-2 win. Lamb recorded his first ever NCAA hat trick with three straight special team goals for a natural hat trick.
With the score tied at 1-1 and his Gophers on the power play, Lamb put his team ahead for good when he followed a shot to the net, picked up the rebound and put it into the net to give his team the lead 2-1. It was Lamb’s third goal of the season and second power play goal of the season.
A great keep by Rinzel leads to Lamber’s second in as many nights! 🚨️

The second goal of the night came in the second period with the Gophers on a two-man advantage. This goal showcased Lamb’s one-timer as he fired a laser of a shot past the St. Thomas goalie to give his team a 3-1 lead (and this goal proved to be the game winning goal).

This goal was at 6:43 of the second period, Lamb’s fourth goal and third power play goal of the season. Less than two minutes later at 8:36 of the second period, Lamb would complete the hat trick when he outworked the St. Thomas defenseman for a rebound and put it past the St. Thomas goalie.
Natty hatty at the X for @brodylamb2! 🎩

The goal was his fifth goal of the season and his fourth power-play goal of the season. This is the Brody Lamb who we believe can help the Rangers as the right winger can score from anywhere on the ice. He can play either wing and do it well.
The offense was part of a 3-0-3 night where Lamb had five shots and was a -1. Lamb was moved up the first line left wing but on the power play was used on both sides.
The goals improved Lamb to 5-3-8 in just six games with a +3. The four power play goals ties for the Division One Men’s lead. And the four power play goals already equals the output Lamb had all of last season.
Nathan Aspinall scored his third goal in two nights as his Flint Firebirds shutout the Owen Sound Attack 3-0 in OHL action. Aspinall’s goal was the icing on the cake for the Firebirds as they earned their second straight win.
It was part of a five-point weekend for the Rangers 2024 fifth-round pick as he remains the leading scorer among the Ranger prospects. Considering that the Rangers drafted Aspinall off a 18-16-34 in 65 games last season and he is 6-5-11 after just 12 games then he is going to shatter what he did last season.
With the Firebirds already up 2-0, Aspinall made it 3-0 when he fired a shot low through the “five-hole” for the even strength goal at 18:22 of the first period and the Attack never threatened after this.

Gabe Perreault set up linemate Ryan Leonard for what proved to be game winning goal with just 51 seconds remaining in regulation as his second-ranked Boston College Eagles rallied from down 2-0 to earn a 4-2 win over Ty Henricks’ 13th-ranked Western Michigan Broncos in non-conference play. It was the first time the Broncos and Eagles every meet on BC’s home ice.
With the game in the final minute of regulation and the game time, Ryan Leonard took away the puck, he fed Gabe Perreaul who was on the attack as the Bronce defenders and goalie turned to face Perreault, he put the puck right back on Leonard’s stick for an easy tap in goal at 19:09 of the third.

Pretty sure there isn’t as good a passer in college hockey as there is in Gabe Leonard. Perreault was 0-1-1 on one shot and was a +1 for the night. Perreault im proves to 2-4-6 +4 after four games.
Teammate defenseman Drew Fortescue was scoreless on one shot as was Western Michigan’s Ty Henricks who was credited with two.
Rasmus Larsson wa sscoreless with only a roughing minor to show for his efforts as his Northern Michigan Wildcats were shutout by Arizona State in non-conference play.
Defenseman E.J. Emery was scoreless on one shot with a +1 as his seventh-ranked North Dakota Fighting Hawks lost to third-ranked Boston University Terriers 4-3 in non-conference play. Emery was the first pair right side defenseman which says a lot about the young freshman.
There is little question that defensively Emery is a very solid defender which makes the question about his offensive skill set but the season is still very early and let us be patient with him. Next weelemd will present another good challenge for Emery as North Dakota travels east to face eighth-ranked Cornell in a non-conference matchup.
Speaking of the eighth-ranked Cornell Big Red, senior defenseman Hank Kempf who was the Rangers seventh-round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft made his 2024-25 season debut as Big Red faced Toronto in exhibition action. Big Red had little trouble as they earned a 6-2 win with Kempf being scoreless.
Kempf is a pure stay-at-home defenseman with next to no offense. While his play has improved over the last couple of seasons, it remains hard to see Kempf signed by the Rangers unless he finds some offense to keep other teams honest. It will be interesting to watch Kempf and Cornell vs Emery and North Dakota as both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Noah Laba missed his second straight game for his Colorado College Tigers as they took on Alaska-Anchorage. Friend of the Prospect Park, Broadmoor Beauties (AKA @CCHockeyNews) tweeted to us that Laba was “Heard he’s “a little banged up.” Day-to-day, should be back soon.”
